The 4th of July
The sound of war
It’s always seemed
That way before
But now I see clearly
Even more
Our countrie’s holidays
Part of a system
That’s the structure
Of racism and violence
Of forced classes
Through legacy laws
Built to suppress
Our BIPOC
To limit their access
Holding freedom
Just out of reach
Threat of violence
Oppression
And death each day
For something in which
They had no say
We are born
How we are born
Into the bodies we are
Our colors and souls
Divinely and randomly arranged
In a discord of past realities
Causing suffering
And pain
No longer allowed
No longer accepted
As the way it is
Humans are humans
Own your past
Choose to learn
Wake up
And move on
Make the necessary
Changes now
Step by step
Listen
And you’ll know how
White rapper boys
Can fight for their right to party
In America
And receive praise & accolades
While BIPOC, LGBTQ+, & Women
Have to fight for their right
To live and succeed
To receive equal pay
For equal work
Equal opportunities
For their talents
To be cultivated
And celebrated
The oppressed & abused
Say enough is enough
The allies say enough is enough
When will it be enough
For those in their legacy
Power from Hate
Fear and Monopolies
Inequalities
Racism
Division
And Lies
To move on from war
And collaborate in peace
It’s possible
And necessary
The old western ways
Can no longer be
The status quo
They’ve got to go
Rebuild and Restructure
Collaborate and Create
Fund and reallocate
The wealth
Disproportionately distributed
For generations
Better processes
Systems and Agencies
That support the lives
And nourishment of those lives
All the people
That for generations
Were taught
Through our systems and actions
That they couldn’t
Have the choices
Have the freedom
Have their lives
Celebrate their culture
In a country founded in “freedom”
This Independence Day
Feels like blasphemy
Of the “American” dream
Our diversity and acts of resistance
Is what is the soul of America
Voices speaking up
In truth
In peace
In hope
For a better tomorrow
Today
“All men are created equal”
Is missing humanity
In our fundamental laws
Has become only the “right” men
All humans are created equal
Recognize and celebrate
Make the changes
Make amends and
For fucks sake
Let us have accountability
And atonement
Onward
And upward
Together
