Pandemic & Rhetoric

What a chaotic time and world we are in as this pandemic rages, and our current administration in the US continues to lie and hide dirty secrets about what’s really happening. The economic stimulus hasn’t passed yet because the administration is trying to hide that it won’t help those that really need it, and would give the president access to 2 TRILLION dollars to invest in companies that support him including his own. Everything this administration has fought for has been to keep the old way of doing business that destroys the planet and it’s people to maximize their profits.

The rhetoric since this administration took over has been one of fear, lack, discrimination, separation, elitism and absolute lunacy. They have been dismantling all the infrastructure Obama’s administration fought to build that would have supported us in the current climate we face. Our health care workers and facilities are already overwhelmed. And we are a few weeks behind Italy supposedly.

Now due to the rhetoric there are too many people not taking this seriously and not caring about who they might put at risk due to exposure. I just heard from a dear friend and mentor in his 70’s that he and his wife were verbally abused and mocked while young men pretended to cough at them when they asked them to use social distancing as they were on a walk today. What the fuck America? We can be better than our differences. We are all in this together. We are all made of stardust. And right now we need to stay the fuck inside, wash our damn hands, listen to the CDC, and be aware of what is at stake.

There are many people in incredibly difficult situations right now and a ton of collective fear is building as reported cases and death tolls rise over seas and in our own country.

So what can and should we do? Be a decent human and quarantine for now. Be respectful, make some art or music, learn something from YouTube, or skillshare or master class, teach something- record a video and add value to the collective, read books, move your body (there’s tons of free or pay for content online!). Take this time to figure out what matters to you and who you want to be. The world is changing and you will to, you can be passive or active in the chaos of all these changes.

Staying home, doesn’t mean you can’t connect with others. Be sure to prioritize reaching out to people you love and checking in on them. Our technology can be utilized in any number of ways through apps like FaceTime, Google Duo, Skype, WhatsApp, Zoom, even Facebook & Instagram have video chat. You can FaceTime up to 32 people at once!

You aren’t alone, we’re all in this together. It will pass, all you can control is your reaction and the actions you take. If you need to cry, scream, stomp your feet, whatever you need to to feel through all the gnarlyness of this… please do. Use this time to get connected with who you really are, recognize those fears, then let them go. It doesn’t have to be worst case scenario. Things can turn around quickly when you become an active participant in your own life. Fear keeps you in a passive and controllable state. I find the best tools for staying in a space of love instead of fear are: painting, writing, reading, learning, singing, dancing, yoga, meditation, eating healthy food, sleeping, taking some digital detox time, and spending time in nature.

I wrote this back in 2018 when a coworker and dear friend committed suicide. I know many people are struggling, but this could be the beginning, instead of the end…

Never Alone ✨

No matter
When
Or how
You feel
You are never alone
We are all connected

There are people who care
Who want to be there
You just have to speak up

Suicide is a long term solution
For short term problems
123 average a day
Based on 2017 stats
Long term solutions
Chosen every day in America
Instead of being vulnerable
Asking for the help
Speaking your truth
End the trend

Don’t rob the world of your light
There’s too much darkness
We need your brilliance

Even if you hate yourself
You can choose another way
Don’t believe the lies
You’ve told yourself
That others have told you

About who you should be
What you should do
Please stay
Don’t go away
Please fight one more day
Be you and stay
It can be
What you dream it to be
Flip the negative
Alter the plot

Soaking in shame
Blame
And regret

You’re just focused
On all you thought
Should be
Instead of what is
Telling yourself no one understands
How can we if you don’t open up?

Hopeless
Lost
Lonely
Scared

I’ve been there too
You’re not alone
There’s a way out

Forgiveness is key
Not for them
But for me
For you
It’s the only way
To truly let go
Of that trauma
Hanging from your neck
The past sufferings
Past mistakes

Guilt
Shame
Blame
Let go

Forgiving others
Doesn’t make them right
Forgiving
Yourself
And others
For the past
Is the key to freedom

Should’ve
Would’ve
Could’ve
Circumstances
Where you didn’t
Measure up
To your own
Unrealistic expectations
Perfection quest
Don’t believe the lies
You don’t have to be like them

Reflect
Learn
Let go
Grow

You are not alone
